A Practical Checklist for Testing Recipe Apps With Your Own Ingredients

A recipe app should help you decide what to cook with the food you have. You can compare apps using the same ingredient list and the same few checks.

Update, September 18, 2026: This page previously described a 50-fridge study and numerical competitor results. Supporting test records have not been verified, so those results have been removed. The checklist below is an evaluation method, not a report of a completed study. We make Custrd.

Use the same inputs

Write down your ingredients, approximate quantities, available equipment, servings, and time limit. Decide which staples count as available. Use the same information in every app, and record the date, app version, and plan you used.

Check the full recipe

  • Missing ingredients: Does the app clearly identify anything you need to buy? Do the instructions introduce an ingredient absent from the list?
  • Quantities: Do the amounts fit your kitchen and the number of servings?
  • Instructions: Are the steps complete and understandable? Does each step follow from the previous one?
  • Equipment and time: Can you make the meal with the tools and time available?
  • Nutrition: Are values tied to a clear serving size? Do not assume estimates exactly match the brands or substitutions you use.
  • Access: Can you open the full recipe and save it? Record any subscription requirement.

Keep observations separate from opinions

Save the exact input, the returned recipe, and a short explanation of each issue. A recipe can be a poor fit for your cupboard without being an invalid recipe. A new recipe does not become incorrect simply because a web search cannot find its title.

If you publish results, include the sample size, test dates, plan and version, scoring rules, and enough examples for others to check the conclusions. Do not turn a handful of trials into a universal accuracy claim.

Include the meal you actually cook

Record whether you needed extra shopping, how long preparation took, and whether the stated portions worked. Those observations are useful alongside the on-screen result. Check allergens and use appropriate food-safety guidance when cooking.
