Custrd List

A Shopping List That Knows What’s Already in Your Kitchen

Every grocery list app is a piece of text that forgot where it came from. Custrd List is wired to your kitchen: it tells you what you already have before you buy more, remembers which recipe each ingredient belongs to, sorts itself by aisle, and stays in sync with whoever else is shopping.

The List Knows What You Already Own

This is the line no notes app can write. Because Custrd List sits on top of your Kitchen inventory, an item can look itself up before you buy it. Milk on your list shows “Your Kitchen has ~1 ml” — barely any left, so buy it. Cumin would tell you the opposite, and save you the third jar.

That single connection removes the most common grocery mistake there is: buying something you already own because you could not see your own cupboard from the supermarket.

Milk knows your kitchen is nearly out. The pepper and onion know which recipe they belong to.

Every Ingredient Remembers Its Recipe

Send a recipe’s ingredients to the list and each one arrives carrying the meal it came from — “bell pepper (red or yellow), diced — For Simple Vegetable Frittata”. Two useful things follow. You know why an odd item is on the list a week later, and you know what you lose by skipping it.

Items take a quantity in whatever unit is natural — 2 medium, 1 box, 12 dozen — and a free-text note, so “Eggs — Note: Organic!” is written down rather than remembered.

It Sorts Itself Into Aisles

The list groups into supermarket sections on its own — Produce, Dairy & Eggs, Bakery — with a count beside each. You walk the shop once, in order, instead of criss-crossing it because your list was in the order you happened to think of things.

Shared With the People You Actually Shop With

A list can be shared with a partner, a family, or a house of roommates, and it syncs live: if someone adds oat milk while you are standing in the shop, it appears on your phone. Check something off and it greys out for everyone, so nobody comes home with two loaves of bread.

Custrd Pro — free for your first 7 days — includes up to 10 shared lists of 15 people each— enough to keep a house list, a personal list, and a holiday-dinner list apart. Joining someone else’s list never counts against your own limit.

Shop It in Person, or Hand It to Instacart

When the list is done you can shop it yourself, or send it to the Instacart® app — you pick the store and check out in your own Instacart account, in regions where the Instacart service operates. Custrd never places orders for you and never sees your payment details. How the grocery hand-off works.

Where List Fits

List is the third board of Custrd Kitchen, alongside Fridge and Pantry. The scan you take to find dinner from what you have updates the inventory; the inventory tells the list what you already own; the list tells you what to buy. Nothing in that loop asks you to do data entry.

Frequently asked questions

What is Custrd List?
Custrd List is the shopping board inside Custrd Kitchen. It is a grocery list that knows what is already in your kitchen, remembers which recipe each ingredient was added for, groups itself by supermarket aisle, and can be shared with the people you actually shop with. Adds and check-offs sync in real time, so whoever is at the store is always looking at the current list.
How is this different from a notes app or a plain list app?
A plain list is a piece of text — it does not know anything. Custrd List is connected to your Kitchen inventory, so an item can tell you that you already have some at home before you buy more. It is connected to your recipes, so an ingredient carries the meal it belongs to. And it sorts itself into aisles like Produce, Dairy & Eggs, and Bakery instead of leaving you to zig-zag the shop.
Can I share a shopping list with my family or roommates?
Yes. A list can be shared with the people you shop with — a partner, a family, a house of roommates — and everything syncs live: if someone adds oat milk while you are in the shop, it appears on your phone. Custrd Pro includes up to 10 shared lists of 15 people each, so you can keep a house list separate from a personal one. Joining someone else's list never counts against your own limit.
Does it know what I already have at home?
Yes — that is the point of wiring the list to the Kitchen. When an item on your list matches something already in your fridge or pantry, the list says so underneath it, with the rough amount you have. It stops you buying a third jar of cumin because you could not see the first two from the shop.
How do recipe ingredients get onto the list?
Add a recipe's ingredients and they land on the list already grouped by aisle, each one tagged with the meal it came from. When you are looking at 'onion, diced — For Simple Vegetable Frittata', you know exactly why it is there and what happens if you skip it.
Can I order the groceries instead of shopping in person?
Your list can be sent to the Instacart® app to shop — you pick the store and check out in your own Instacart account, in regions where the Instacart service operates. Custrd never places orders for you and never sees your payment details.
Can I add notes and quantities to items?
Yes. Every item takes a quantity in whatever unit makes sense — 2 medium, 1 box, 12 dozen — and a free-text note, so 'Eggs — Note: Organic!' survives the trip to the shop instead of living in your head.
