Step 1
Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.

Add cold butter cubes and rub between your fingertips until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs, ~2 minutes.

Pour 0.75 cup milk into the flour mixture and fold gently with a spatula until dough just comes together.

Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently press into a 1-inch-thick round, no kneading.

Cut the round into 8 wedges with a sharp knife. Place on prepared baking sheet 2 inches apart.

Brush scone tops with remaining 2 tbsp milk.

Bake until scones are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 12-15 minutes.

Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
