Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 21, 2026

Custrd ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data when you use the Custrd mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service"). By using Custrd, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information You Provide

- Account information: When you sign up, we collect your email address, display name, and username. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email from those providers. - Profile information: Avatar photos, bio, dietary preferences, nutrition goals, ingredient exclusions, and display customizations you set in the app. - Meal content: Recipes you save, meals you cook, folders you create, personal notes you write on meals, and meal ratings. - Community content: Posts, comments, reactions, and meal submissions you publish or submit. - Ingredients: Ingredients you scan, enter manually, or capture via camera during cooking sessions. - Photos: Photos you upload for meal submissions or profile avatars. - Nutrition data: Daily nutrition logs, macro targets, goal profiles, and fasting plans you configure. - Search history: Queries you type into the in-app search. - Shopping lists: Items you add to your shopping list.

1.2 Information Collected Automatically

- Usage data: Features you use, screens you visit, buttons you tap, and interactions with meals and community content. - Scan sessions: Records of ingredient capture sessions including detected ingredients. - Quest and achievement data: Your quest progress and achievement history. - Device information: Device type, operating system version, and app version. - Log data: Error logs and performance data to help us fix bugs.

1.3 Information from Third Parties

- Google / Apple Sign In: If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email address from those services. - Barcode data: When you scan a product barcode, we query OpenFoodFacts, an open-source database, to identify the ingredient. - Recipe data: We use the Spoonacular API to supplement our internal recipe library with additional recipe and nutrition information.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to: - Create and manage your account - Personalize meal recommendations based on your dietary preferences, goals, and saved meals - Power ingredient scanning and AI-based meal generation - Display your profile and content to other users in the community - Track your achievements and quest progression - Process your Pro subscription through Apple's in-app purchase system - Send transactional emails (account verification, password reset) - Detect and prevent abuse, spam, and violations of our Terms - Improve the app by understanding how features are used - Respond to support requests We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.

3. Apple Health (HealthKit)

Connecting Apple Health is optional. Custrd works fully without it, and you choose each kind of access separately. What Custrd reads, only with your permission: - Activity: active energy, resting energy and step count - Body mass, only if you separately turn on weight trends and confirm you are 18 or older - Nutrition, sleep and workout summaries, only if you separately turn on advanced insights What Custrd writes, only if you turn on meal syncing: - Calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat for a meal you finished cooking and chose to count How that data is handled: - Your raw Apple Health records are read and analysed on your iPhone. Custrd does not upload raw Health samples, exact Health totals, weight, dates, or Health identifiers to our servers. - We never use Apple Health data for advertising or marketing, and we never sell it. - Apple Health data is not written to your Custrd profile, is not included in our analytics, and is not stored in iCloud by Custrd. - Sharing Health context with Custrd Insights is a separate choice that is off by default. If you turn it on, Insights can send Anthropic (Claude) only coarse categories for activity, sleep, workouts, and nutrition — lower, near, higher, or unknown compared with your own recent pattern — along with your chat request. It does not send raw samples, exact totals, weight, dates, or Health identifiers. - Turning Health context for Insights off stops future Health summaries from being sent. It does not delete earlier Insights chats, which remain stored with your account under the same retention controls as your other chat messages. - Apple Health data is never used to decide your goals for you. You set your goal in Nutrition & Goals; Health can only add context. - You can turn Health context for Insights off separately in Custrd. You can also turn other Health features off in Custrd or revoke access in the Apple Health app under Sharing, or in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Health. Revoking Health access stops Custrd reading new data; it does not delete anything already in Apple Health, which only you control.

4. How We Share Your Information

3.1 Public Content

If you post to the Custrd community, submit meals for publication, or set your profile to public, that content is visible to other users of the app. This includes your display name, avatar, posts, and published meals.

3.2 Service Providers

We share data with third-party services that help us operate Custrd:
These providers only process your data as necessary to provide their services to us. They are not permitted to use your data for their own purposes.

3.3 Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of Custrd, our users, or the public.

3.4 Business Transfers

If Custrd is acquired or merges with another company, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your data is transferred and subject to a different privacy policy.

5. Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we permanently delete your profile, saved meals, cook log, kitchen and shopping lists, nutrition data, and the other personal data tied to your account within 30 days. Some anonymized, non-identifiable data may be retained for analytics purposes. Recipes you shared publicly to the community feed, and any notes or photos you contributed to the shared ingredient and cooking-tool libraries, remain available to other people with your name and account permanently detached from them. They are no longer linked to you or to any account. If you want that content removed as well, email us at support@custrd.com and we will remove it. The full list of what is deleted and what is kept is at custrd.com/delete-account. A deletion audit log is maintained for legal compliance purposes but does not contain personal content.
