Step 1
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Step 2
In a bowl, whisk together 2 cups flour and 2 tsp baking powder. In a large bowl, beat 3/4 cup butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Step 3
Beat in 2 eggs one at a time, then stir in 3/4 cup milk and 1 tsp vanilla extract (if you have it). Gradually mix in the flour mixture until just combined.
Step 4
Divide batter between pans and bake until a toothpick comes out clean, 25-30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely.
Step 5
For frosting, beat 2 cups powdered sugar with 1/4 cup softened butter and 2-3 tbsp milk until smooth and spreadable. Add more milk if needed.
Step 6
Place one cake layer on a plate, spread with a third of the frosting, top with the second layer. Frost the top and sides with the remaining frosting.
Step 7
Arrange 1.5 cups red berries (strawberries, raspberries, or a mix) on top of the cake just before serving.
