Step 1
Rinse the 1 cup glutinous rice in cold water until the water runs clear, then soak in water for at least 30 minutes. Drain well.
Step 2
In a bowl, mix the drained rice with 0.5 cup coconut milk, 2 tbsp sugar, and 0.25 tsp salt. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Step 3
Peel the 2 bananas and slice each lengthwise into 4 strips. Cut each banana leaf into a 10-inch square and wipe clean.
Step 4
Place a banana leaf square on a work surface. Spoon about 2 tbsp of the rice mixture into the center, top with 2 banana strips, then cover with another 2 tbsp of rice.
Step 5
Fold the leaf over the filling to form a packet, tucking in the sides. Tie securely with kitchen string to make a neat parcel. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
Step 6
Place the packets in a steamer basket over boiling water. Steam over medium heat until the rice is tender and cooked through, about 30-35 minutes.
Step 7
Remove from the steamer and let cool for 5 minutes. Unwrap and serve warm, drizzled with extra coconut milk if desired.
