Instructions

  1. Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the 2.25 tsp yeast and 1 tbsp of the sugar in the 1 cup warm milk. Let sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes.

  2. Step 2

In a large bowl, whisk together the 2 cups flour, remaining 1 tbsp sugar, and 0.5 tsp salt. Make a well in the center.

  3. Step 3

Pour the yeast mixture and 1 beaten egg into the well. Stir with a wooden spoon until a sticky dough forms, about 2 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

  5. Step 5

Heat the 4 cups oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  6. Step 6

Using two spoons or a cookie scoop, drop rounded tablespoons of dough into the hot oil. Fry in batches of 4-5, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per batch.

  7. Step 7

Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat with remaining dough.

  8. Step 8

Dust generously with the 0.5 cup powdered sugar while still warm. Serve immediately.
