- Is Custrd out yet?
- Yes. Custrd is live on the App Store and free to download on iPhone. If you'd rather not install anything, the recipe finder on this site works in any browser with no signup.
- Is Custrd free?
- Yes. Custrd is free to download and use. The free plan gives you ingredient scanning, every matching recipe from the Custrd library with no cap on results, unlimited saved meals, global recipe search, a shared shopping list for 5 people, and more. Custrd Pro unlocks the full experience including Custrd Insights as your unlimited AI chef, triple the global recipe results, and exclusive features.
- How does the ingredient scanning work?
- Open Custrd and point your camera at any ingredient or group of ingredients. The app detects them in under 15 seconds using AI-powered computer vision, then matches your exact ingredients against a curated recipe database and shows every meal you can realistically make right now — no substitutions, no guessing.
- Do I have to type my ingredients in by hand?
- No — that's the reason Custrd exists. Pantry apps die the day they make you type in every item by hand, and nobody keeps that up. In Custrd the camera does the entry: point it at your fridge, counter, or pantry and your Kitchen fills itself in, expiry dates included. Typing is there if you ever want it; it's never the job.
- Are the recipes real or AI-generated?
- Every result is a complete dish with real steps, real photos, and real macro data — never a wall of ads or a life story before the ingredients. Custrd searches a library of 200,000+ recipes, including dishes submitted by home cooks and verified chefs — those carry a badge naming the cook, so you know when a recipe came from someone's kitchen.
- What diets and filters does Custrd support?
- Custrd supports 15+ dietary filters including vegan, vegetarian, keto, gluten-free, dairy-free, paleo, high-protein, and low-carb. Set your filters once in your profile and you'll never see a recipe that doesn't fit your diet.
- What's the difference between Scan, Multi, and Scan Pro?
- Scan mode takes a single photo. Multi mode lets you take up to 3 photos to capture more ingredients at once. Scan Pro (available on the Pro plan) lets you take up to 5 photos and scans packaged foods via barcode as well.
- Does it work if I only have a few ingredients?
- Yes — Custrd is specifically built for this. Even with 2 or 3 ingredients, Custrd will find real recipes that match what you have, ranked by how close each one is to cookable — and it can surface meals you're only an ingredient or two away from, so you know exactly what to grab next time you shop.
- Can I save recipes I like?
- Yes. Save any meal to your library, organize them into custom folders, and access them anytime — saves are unlimited for every user, free and Pro alike.
- Can Custrd order my missing ingredients?
- Almost — it hands them off. Tap “Order on Instacart” on any ingredient, or send a recipe's whole list at once, and it opens in the Instacart® app with your items ready to shop. You pick the store and check out in your own Instacart account; Custrd never places orders for you. Available where the Instacart® service operates (U.S. and Canada).
- Can I share a shopping list with my household?
- Yes, and you don't need Pro for it. The free plan includes one shared shopping list with up to 5 people in it — enough for most households — and everything syncs in real time, so whoever is at the store sees items the moment someone at home adds them. Joining a list someone invites you to never counts against your own limit, so you can be a member of as many lists as you're invited to. Custrd Pro raises it to 10 shared lists of 15 people each, which matters if you're running more than one household — a home, a parents' place, a shared house. The people-per-list cap follows whoever created the list, so one Pro subscriber upgrades the whole group.
- What is the Creator Program?
- The Custrd Creator Program lets home cooks and chefs submit original recipes to the app. Approved dishes are published in the Custrd Library with the creator's name and socials on them, and creators earn rewards as other users cook their dishes. Apply at custrd.com/creators.
- Will there be an Android version?
- Custrd launched on iOS first. Android is planned for a future release, but there is no date yet — we'd rather not promise one we can't keep.
- How much does it cost to get started?
- Nothing. Custrd is free to download and the free plan is genuinely usable — no trial timer on it. Custrd Pro is a paid upgrade if you want the AI chef and the larger global recipe results.
